નવરાત્રિનાં પ્રથમ દિવસે નવદુર્ગાનું ‘‘શૈલ પુત્રી’’ રૂપની પૂજા-આરાધના થાય છે. શૈલ એટલે પર્વત. અને આ પર્વત પુત્રી એટલેમા દુર્ગાનું પ્રથમ રૂપ‘‘શૈલપુત્રી’’ જે પાર્વતી તેમજ હેમવતી રૂપે પણ પ્રસિદ્ધ છે. માર્કંડેયપુરાણમાં આ હિમાલય પુત્રી શૈલપુત્રીને પ્રથમ સ્થાન આપ્યું છે. હિમાલયની જેમ સૌથી ઊંચાઈએ આપણા શરીરમાં આવેલા મનની જ્યોતિ ચંદ્રમાની શીતળતા છે. તેવા આપણા મનમાં સાત્વિક વિચાર આવે અને તે પ્રાપ્ત કરાવી દે તેવી શૈલપુત્રી છે.પર્વતરાજ હિમાલયને ત્યાં પુત્રી રૂપે અવતરીત મા શૈલપુત્રી, વૃષભ પર બિરાજીત છે જેના જમણાં હાથમાં ત્રિશૂળ અને ડાબા હાથમાં કમળનું પુષ્પ શોભાયમાન છે. આ નવદુર્ગાઓની પ્રથમ નવદુર્ગા છે.

વન્દે વાગ્છિતલાભાય ચન્દ્રાર્ધ કૃત શેખરામ્ ।

વૃષારૂઢાં શૂલધરાં શૈલપુત્રી યશસ્વિનીમ્ ।।

પૂર્વ જન્મમાં દક્ષ પ્રજાપતિની પુત્રીના રૃપે જન્મ્યાં હતાં. ત્યારે સતી નામ હતું. તેનું લગ્ન શંકરજી સાથે થયેલ. એક વખત દક્ષે મહાન યજ્ઞાનું આયોજન કર્યું, પણ તેમાં શંકરજીને આમંત્રણ ન આપ્યું તેમ જ યજ્ઞનું ફળભાગ પણ ન આપ્યું. બીજા દેવદેવતાને આમંત્રણ આપ્યું તેમ જ એને ફળભાગ પણ આપ્યા. સતીને પિતાના ઘેર યજ્ઞામાં જવાની ઇચ્છા થઈ અને પોતાનાં માતા-પિતા, બહેનોને મળવાની ઇચ્છા થઈ, શંકરજીએ ના પાડવા છતાં સતીજી માન્યાં નહીં. અંતે શંકર ભગવાનને રજા આપી. સતીજી પિયર ગયાં ત્યાં ફક્ત તેમની માતાએ તેમનો આદર કર્યો. બાકી પિતા, બહેનો તથા સંબંધીઓએ વ્યંગ વચનો કહ્યાં. આ જોઈ સતી દુઃખી થયાં. તેમને વધુ દુઃખ તો એટલે થયું કે ત્યાં ચતુર્દીક ભગવાન શંકર માટે પણ બધાંને તિરસ્કારભાવ હતો. દક્ષરાજે પણ તેમના માટે અપમાનજનક શબ્દો વાપર્યા. શંકરજીની વાત ન માનવા સતીજીને અહીં આવી દુઃખ થયું અને પતિનું અપમાન સહન ન થતાં પોતાના શરીરને યોગાગ્નિમાં ભષ્મ કરી લીધું. વજ્રપાત સમાન આ ઘટના સાંભળી શંકરજી ક્રોધે ભરાયા અને યજ્ઞાનો ધ્વંસ કરવા પોતાના ગણોને મોકલ્યા. ગણોએ યજ્ઞાનો ધ્વંસ કર્યો. એ જ સતીએ બીજા જન્મમાં હિમાલયની પુત્રીરૃપે જન્મ લીધો. તેમને પાર્વતી, હેમવતી પણ કહે છે. ઉપનિષદ કથા પ્રમાણે હેમવતીએ પોતાના સ્વરૃપથી દેવતાઓનો ગર્વ પણ તોડેલ અને બીજા જન્મમાં પણ શંકરજી સાથે તેમનાં લગ્ન થયાં.

આસો સુદ-૧ના રોજ આ સ્વરૃપની ઉપાસના થાય છે. આ પ્રથમ દિવસની ઉપાસનામાં યોગીઓ પોતાના મનને મુલાધારચક્રમાં સ્થિત કરે છે. જ્યાંથી યોગસાધનાનો આરંભ થાય છે.

શૈલપુત્રી મંત્ર

યા દેવી સર્વભૂતેષુ શૈલપુત્રીરૃપેણ સંસ્થિતા ।

નમસ્તસ્યૈ નમસ્તસ્યૈ નમસ્તસ્યૈ નમો નમઃ ।।

ચરાચરેશ્વરી ત્વં હિ, મહામોહ વિનાશિની ભુકિત, મુકિત દાયિની,શૈલપુત્રીં પ્રણમામ્યહમ્।।

પ્રથમ દિવસે દેવી - માતા શૈલપુત્રી પ્રસાદ

પ્રથમ નોરતામાં માતાજીના ચરણોમાં ગાયનો શુદ્ધ ઘી ચડાવવાથી આરોગ્યનો આશીર્વાદ મળે છે અને શરીર નિરોગી રહે છે.
