ગણેશજી તેમના જાડા પેટના કારણે લંબોદર કહેવાય છે.ચીનના લાફિંગ બુદ્ધા સિવાય ભગવાન ગણેશ જ એક માત્ર એવા દેવ છે જેમનું  પેટ જાડું છે . ગણેશના જાડા પેટને  ખુશહાલી અને આનંદનું  પ્રતીક ગણાય છે. ગણેશજીના જાડા પેટ વિષે ઘણી કથાઓ અને માન્યતાઓ છે. એક માન્યતા મુજબ ભગવાન શિવે ગણેશને હંસતા હંસતા લંબોદર કહી દીધું જેની અસર એ થઈ કે ગણેશજીનું  પેટ લાંબુ થઈ ગયુ. 
 
બ્રહ્મ પુરાણ મુજબ ભગવાન ગણેશ માતા પાર્વતીના લાડલા હતા. તેમને હમેશા એ  ડર રહેતો કે ભાઈ કાર્તિકેય આવીને માતાનું  દૂધ ન પી લે આથી તે દિવસ ભર માતાના આંચલમાં છુપાઈને બેસી રહેતા હતા.  તેની આ ટેવના કારણે એક દિવસ ભગવાન શિવે મજાકમાં કહી દીધું કે લંબોદર જાવ  અહીંથી . તે દિવસથી ગજાનન  લંબોદર થઈ ગયા . 
 
ગણપતિના લંબોદર હોવા પાછળ આ કારણ છે કે ગણેશજીએ સંસારને જ્ઞાન આપે છે કે પેટ જાડુ રાખો . પેટ જાડુને રાખો મતલબ એ નથી કે ખાઈ-પીને જાડુ કરો. પેટ જાડુ કરોનો મતલબ છે કે દરેક વાતને હજમ કરતા સીખો. તમારી આસ-પાસ જે પણ વાત થાય તેને સાંભળીને તમારા પેટમાં જ રાખો.  કોઈની વાત અહીંની ત્યાં ન કરવી. આવું કરવાથી તમે હમેશા ખુશ રહેશો.
